30 Days Of iOS Tips: Create Custom Notification Vibrations

You may know how to change your ringtone, but did you know you can also customize your iPhone’s vibration pattern? Here’s how to do it.

Open the Settings app, then navigate to the main Settings screen if you aren’t there already. Tap Sounds, then tap any of the notification types you can assign alert sounds or vibration patterns to. Next, tap Vibration—it’s right at the top of the alert options screen.

Once you’re on the Vibration screen, you can change the notification vibration pattern to one of the various built-in options, but we don’t want that—we want to make our own. So scroll to the bottom and tap Create New Vibration.

When prompted, tap on your screen in whatever rhythmic pattern you want for this particular vibration alert. As you tap the screen, your iPhone’s vibrator will buzz to give you an idea of what it’ll be like. Once you’re done, tap Stop. To play back your vibration pattern, tap Play. If you want to re-record it, tap Record, then tap out a new pattern. Once you’ve got a vibration pattern you like, go ahead and tap Save, give your vibration pattern a name, then tap Save again.
