Mozilla Thunderbird goes 5.0 with new public beta

Oh Mail.app, you make it so easy to both love and hate you at the same time. During times of the latter, I find myself digging through alternatives faster than I care to admit. Lately it’s been all about Sparrow, but Mozilla may just have something to say about that shortly. Thunderbird 5.0 has finally been released as a public beta.

There are quite a few notable changes, which you can read on the release page. Here are some of the more important ones:

  • Support for Mac 32/64 bit Universal builds (Thunderbird Beta will no longer support PowerPC on Mac)
  • Attachment sizes now displayed along with attachments
  • Tabs can now be reordered and dragged to different windows

There are also some known issues being reported already, so keep in mind that this is the first beta release of the application — it could come with its fair share of problems. If you live on the edge, and thrive with these sorts of things, then this may be for you.

If you give it a try, we’d love to know your thoughts.
