BREAKING: Apps advertising 4.2 compatibility hit App Store, iOS 4.2 release imminent?

iOS apps claiming 4.2 compatibility are appearing in the iTunes App Store tonight, suggesting those with iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) will shortly be receiving an operating system upgrade.

Below is a screenshot for thetrainline, a UK app that sells train tickets. Look under where it says “What’s New in Version 2.0.2”:

There is no official release date for iOS 4.2, although whispers of a November 8-12 push have been rumored in the blogosphere.

Fixes in the 4.2 update include a bug in daylight savings clock adjustment, which caused issues in the UK. It will supposedly affect the US this week.
