OWC Introduces Retina Display MacBook Pro SSD Upgrades

Did you purchase a new MacBook Pro with Retina display with a 256GB SSD but are constantly running out of storage? OWC feels your pain and has offered an expensive solution: a 480GB “6G” SSD. OWC is offering this beast of an SSD for $579. Not only will you gain a few extra gigs of storage with this drive, but you’ll also gain some speed as well. OWC has claimed that this drive offers read/write speeds of 500MB/s. Finally, the drive comes with all tools needed to install this proprietary SSD as well as a USB 3.0 enclosure for your old SSD so you can have quick on-the-go external storage in your laptop bag.

While this may sound great on paper, there is a catch. The OWC SSD actually costs $79.99 more than if you were to upgrade to a 512GB drive directly from Apple. However, if you’ve already purchased your MacBook Pro and are past the return date, the OWC upgrade may be your only choice. And even though it may be expensive, it’s nice to know that the Retina MacBook Pro is upgradeable to some extent.

While this upgrade is not yet available on OWC’s site for purchase, we will update this post when it is. Check back soon!
